November 4–December 10 195.5/135 hrs First of all, where did all this extra time come from? Holy cow, I guess time flies when you’re having fun.  This last month with the office has been phenomenal.  Between finishing up our social media campaign for ARHU’s first Dean’s Lecture Series of the semester and prepping and carrying out Scholarship Day today (still monitoring our Twitter feed as I type!).  I remember starting this internship wondering if I was even cut out for this kind of work and as I come to the end of the semester, I really do think I am! Since I last shared my time with you, I have:

  • Photographed and followed up with our Dean’s Lecture Series with Walter Isaacson.
  • Helped prepare the social media campaign for Scholarship Day (Wed. 10) to raise money for student scholarships in our college.
  • Developed content for our website
  • Created two videos for Scholarship Day highlighting students and how their scholarships have helped them
  • Implemented an awesome  Scholarship Day social media campaign

I don’t know about you, but that’s what I call going out with a bang!  It was pretty cool going through the whole process of planning and implementing both of our social media campaigns, especially while also having 483 this semester because I was able to take the things I learned about creating a proposal and campaign and apply them to my job.  We created our overall goals and objectives and created and implemented our strategies and tactics, which helped win us 3 challenges throughout the day amounting to an additional $2K toward the school!  It’s nice to be able to see something you learn in theory be carried out and think to yourself, “Huh. I’m not learning this for nothing after all!”  It’s a rare thing to experience in school these days, I think. I feel super accomplished, but at the same time I don’t really feel finished despite the fact that it’s the last week of the semester, which is why I’ll continue working in the office next semester in addition to my new internship with Van Eperen and Company . One thing I definitely picked up is that when you’re in PR, you get a lot of work done with your clients, but if you planned on getting anything done for your self, that can often be put on the back burner for priorities. This realization really stands out to me because when I recently interviewed with Van Eperen and Company, and they mentioned going through their own rebranding and have to put themselves on the back burner often, and that my role as their intern would be implementing the rebranding process.  Going through this issue myself with my personal project for MarComm, I felt a little better about my role in helping the MarComm team rebrand itself and understanding that this wasn’t a function of bad time management on my part—it can happen to any small agency.
