It’s that time of the year again: internship application due dates are rolling around the corner. There are a lot of tips and suggestions on how to get the internship of your dreams and what to do after you get your internship, but what about the part between both of them? Prepping for interviews can be hard especially if you’re like me and have a tendency to psych yourself out. Here a few tips to rock the interview for that internship you’ve always wanted.

  • Get there early. I’m a firm believer in the phrase “If you’re early, you’re on time; if you’re on time, you’re late; and if you’re late, you better have donuts!” Get to your interview 10 minutes early. Not only does it make you look good, but it also gives you the time to prep yourself for the interview and brush off any vibes you’ve had from earlier in the day and put your game face on!
  • Dress the part.  For the love of god, don’t show up to an interview in street clothes.  Even if the house style of the company is very relaxed and causal, you should always look your best and skip over your ripped jeans and baggy T-shirts.  It’s better to be too dressed up than too dressed down.  Find out what the house style of the company is that you are applying for is and either aim to meet it or go just above their set standards.
  • No, really—dress the part. If you’re doing a Skype interview, still dress appropriately for the interview. Forego the ratty T-Shirt and wear a nice top.  Show that even though you are at home, you are still dedicated to the professionalism that they are expecting from you.
  • Leave no question unanswered! When your employer asks you if you have any questions for them, never say no!  Your future employers want to know what you want to know about them.  Having nothing to ask makes it seem like you’ve done no research and that you are uninterested in the job. Here are a few questions you can ask your employers.
    • “What’s a normal day here at the organization?”
    • “Do you like working here?”
    • “If I were to start work tomorrow, what would be on my to-do list?”

Here are a few other interview questions that will make any employer want to hire you from PR Daily.

  • Be yourself! When you are at an interview you are showing your employer that you are both qualified for the job and also compatible for the workspace. It’s a formal situation but they’re still getting to know you—so don’t be a robot. Let your shine through your conversation and show them who you are!  Who knows, you might even find a common interest in women’s basketball! Finding common ground can ease your interview anxiety as well.

Overall when it comes down to it, it’s all about what you know and how you are able to present it.  Do you have any interview tips?  Share them with me in the comments section or Tweet me @tie_jackets
