Handling Diversity in Theatre

Being part of a theatre community, multiculturalism and diversity will be a huge part of your daily experiences.  Here are some tips from Shakespeare Theatre Company on how to handle it.

Shakespeare Theatre Tips for Diversity

Being part of a theatre community, multiculturalism and diversity will be a huge part of one’s daily experiences.  It is important to keep differences in mind and to remember not to exclude other people.  The Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) does a fantastic job exemplifying this.

What does “diversity” mean to you?

Diversity means covering groups who are frequently left out of news and productions.  By including those who are not often included in productions, we can help to eliminate biases and prejudices about races that we are unfamiliar with.

How to Build a Background

The Society of Profession suggests that in order to build a background, you should “ask the question” that people avoid.  With such a diverse background, Shakespeare Theatre Company does not limit the themes and backgrounds to the typical standard British setting that Shakespeare’s words set up.  Instead they reach out and experiment with Shakespeare’s text through different cultures.

Shakespeare Theatre Company also offers several opportunities for the community to get free tickets and to see free shows so that people held back by costs can still partake in the experiences highlighted by the theatre.

Communicating re-issues with language

It is crucial to be careful with your language when you are dealing with multiculturalism, especially in the theatre community.  Shakespeare Theatre Company takes care of this by using inclusive language in their advertisements.
